Director of Membership and Development

REPORTS TO: President and CEO

SALARY: $95,000 - $110,000

LOCATION: Medicaid Health Plans of America, Washington, DC

TARGET START DATE: June 2013

JOB PURPOSE: Under the direction of the president and CEO, the director of membership and development is responsible for managing the organization’s membership department including: sponsorship of the annual conference; development of a robust membership recruitment plan; and retention of membership. This position also will support the president & CEO and MHPA’s board of directors. This position has primary responsibility for the annual conference, with the assistance of the membership and events coordinator. Serving as a senior member of the management team, this position is also responsible for helping shape the organization for the future and implementing the organization’s strategic plan.

Job Description

• Direct and oversee MHPA membership and development activity;
• Lead the organization’s efforts to attain an annual budget of $3 million;
• Strategic and day-to-day responsibility for recruitment and retention of MHPA member plans, partners, and supporting members;
• Staff MHPA Membership Committee;
• Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential members and sponsors;
• Maintain, develop, and enhance MHPA membership database;
• Monitor goals throughout the year and make any necessary adjustments to reach annual goals;
• Plan and conduct regular membership outreach;
• Manage a direct report who assists in membership and events;
• Write grant proposals and reports to corporate, foundation and government funders;
• Support, prepare, and strategically deploy the president & CEO with key potential members;
• Work collaboratively across departments to advance the mission of the organization;
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Some travel required

• Experience with “Your Membership” software a plus
• Record of success and professional achievements
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Willing to work evenings and weekends as needed

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree required. Work experience may substitute for advanced degree. Minimum 5 years of experience in front line membership development with a nonprofit organization or trade association. Health care industry experience preferred.
